County Partners with Rebuild Upstate for Senior Disaster Assistance

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

In a new effort to help senior citizens recover from storm damage, Rebuild Upstate, a local nonprofit, is partnering with Anderson County to offer financial assistance for home repairs. The program, funded by the S.C. Housing Trust Fund Disaster Assistance Program, is aimed at low-income homeowners in unincorporated areas of the county.

The initiative provides up to $30,000 for eligible exterior repairs, including the removal of trees blocking access to a home. To qualify, homeowners must meet several criteria: their household income must be at or below 80 percent of the area's median income, and the home must be owner-occupied. The assistance is specifically for properties in Anderson County but excludes those within the city limits of Anderson.

The partnership is a direct extension of Rebuild Upstate's mission to preserve affordable housing by making homes safer and more livable for its low-income neighbors. The organization, which envisions a community where everyone has a safe home, is managing the program alongside the county.

Residents interested in applying for assistance can do so through the Rebuild Upstate website. For more information, a helpline has been established at 864-643-5711, with direct contact also available through Kathryn Bender at 864-729-4606.
