Council to Vote on Data Center Moratorium as Part of Tuesday’s Meeting

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Anderson County Council at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday is expected to vote on the Center Rock zoning map, a proposed data-center moratorium, an economic-development incentive agreement, and the revival of the Savannah River National Scenic Byway.

In an unusual move, the regular meeting is connected to a pair of moves at the earlier 6 p.m. proclamations and recognitions meeting.

Council is expected to proclaim Sept. 22 as National Scenic Byway Day and formally recognize the 110-mile Savannah River National Scenic Byway, including Anderson County’s 39-40-mile stretch that includes Hartwell Lake and Green Pond Landing. Council is also set to honor Pendleton Recreation Association’s 12U baseball team for its state championship and World Series appearance, as well as the association’s 8U All-Star team for winning a district title.

The regular meeting includes four public hearings and final votes on major measures: adopting the zoning map approved by Center Rock Precinct voters, who backed zoning in an Aug. 11 referendum by a 452-95 margin; final action on a six-month moratorium on new data-center applications while county officials develop regulations addressing the industry’s effects on utilities, water, infrastructure, and nearby property owners; and a proposed fee in lieu and special-source-credit agreement with for an expansion at Arthrex, which is proposing a new $28.2 million investment with 63 new full-time jobs .

On first reading, council will consider rezoning 91.65 acres on Dixon Road in the Centerville Station A Precinct from I-2 Industrial Park to R-20 Single-Family Residential. It will also vote on Project Palmetto, a proposed industrial project promising to deliver at least $215.56 million in investment and create at least 217 jobs, through a proposed fee-in-lieu-of-tax agreement and inclusion in a joint Anderson-Greenville industrial park.
