Council Final Reading on Roads Referendum Tuesday

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Anderson County Council on Tuesday will vote on the third and final reading of the proposal to allow voters to decide on a referendum to allow a one-cent Capital Sales Tax for road and bridges maintenance and repair.

If approved the measure would be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot countywide.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse, and citizens who wish to comment on the measure during the public hearing are asked to sign up prior to the meeting.

Anderson County currently has a backlog of more than $350 million in road/bridge projects for which there is no funding. For more details as well as a complete listing of roads set to be repaired if voters approve the referendum, as well as the wording of the measure as it will appear on the ballot, visit here.

Anderson County has never had a financial engine to provide for the maintenance and repairs of roads and bridges. Council members have repeated stressed the fact that allowing the referendum is simply a mechanism to provide voters with the chance to express their conviction on the proposal.

Also on the agenda, council will consider tax incentives for a pair of businesses seeking to invest in the county.
