AIT Aims to Marry Technology and Employability

At Anderson Institute of Technology, the new school is both a fresh start and a refinement of work already under way: a school built to make teenagers employable, adaptable, and, above all, present. Dr. Tiffany Estes, the institute’s director, said the past year brought strong enrollment, more completers than ever before, and a widening sense that the school is becoming not merely a place where students pass through, but one where they choose to stay, often in multiple fields of study.

AIT, which serves students from school districts 3, 4, and 5, is entering the year with about 1,200 to 1,300 students. More telling, perhaps, than the head count is the number of students who completed a pathway: last year’s completer ceremony included five double- and triple-completers, and the school handed out more than 1,000 certifications. Estes said this is evidence that the faculty is doing something right, but also that the school is shifting its attention toward a more exacting question: what, precisely, should career-and-technical education prepare a student to do?

The answer, at AIT this year, is about not only technology but about judgment, punctuality, and the habits that make a worker reliable. Estes said the school is tightening its focus on employability skills — showing up on time, following procedures, communicating clearly, working well with others, and understanding that skill without discipline is of limited use. She spoke of attendance as an increasingly serious concern, not only because missed time makes it hard to recover in skill-based labs, but because the lessons of the workplace are, in her telling, inseparable from the lessons of school.

That emphasis has practical consequences. In automotive, for instance, students who miss the safety unit cannot simply move ahead to the next stage; the curriculum is built in layers, and one absence can unsettle the whole sequence. AIT also wants students to understand seat-time requirements, which in South Carolina amount to 120 hours for a unit toward graduation. Estes said the school is trying to make that system transparent rather than punitive, with make-up time available on Saturdays and through other arrangements, but with the underlying message unmistakable: the school can open the door, but students must walk through it.

What makes AIT unusual is that students often do not merely come for one pathway and leave. Some return for more or simply stay because they like the atmosphere. Estes described one student who completed engineering, then returned for electricity and automotive, because the school had become, in effect, a place of habit and confidence. That kind of loyalty matters to AIT, not just as a compliment, but as a sign that the school’s culture is working.

The institute is also using the year to sharpen its offerings. It has 18 full-time programs, including health science, vet science, automotive, welding, cosmetology, and mechatronics, with mechatronics showing growth. Two new instructors are joining the Health Science Biomed program, and the school is continuing to think strategically about which programs are healthy, which overlap too much, and which may need to be reimagined. Estes was candid that interest alone is not enough; aptitude matters too, and the school wants to avoid training students into dead ends simply because a field sounds appealing at 15.

That strategic sorting extends to the school’s relationship with Tri-County Technical College. AIT and Tri-County are in active conversation about aligning programs, expanding dual-credit opportunities, and making sure the transition from high school to college or work feels more like a staircase than a leap. Estes said the collaboration still has room to deepen, but the logic is plain enough: if students are going to move on, the movement should be intentional, coordinated, and useful.

The school is also looking outward, toward the region’s labor market and its own identity within Anderson County. Manufacturing remains a priority, and Estes said AIT would like to increase student interest in areas like mechatronics and perhaps reopen machine tool and CNC training if circumstances allow.

There is talk, too, of a new program tied to the lakes around the area, though she was careful not to promise what still needs final approval.

If AIT sounds at times like a miniature economy, that is because it is meant to function like one. Students from the three districts mingle by interest rather than by home school, and the atmosphere is meant to reduce rivalry while building confidence. Estes said that the school’s advisory groups, business partners, and district leaders all help keep the programs tethered to real demand. Without those outside voices, she suggested, educators might train for what they imagine the workforce needs instead of what it asks for.

The coming year will also bring more attention to safety and infrastructure. AIT recently added restrooms in its conference center so visitors would not have to move through student areas, a small but revealing improvement in how the school thinks about traffic, privacy, and control. Estes said safety is foundational, something that shapes everything else, from how students move through the building to how staff think about risk.

The school’s website and social media remain the best ways to follow its programming, but the broader story is easier to tell in person, and the facility regularly hosts open houses and invites members of the community to visit. AIT is trying to be the sort of place where technical education is not a consolation prize or a vocational holding pattern, but a serious rehearsal for adult life. Its ambition is not merely to produce completers, but to produce young people who can enter the world on time, prepared, and with a usable sense of themselves.
