Anderson reflects the statewide trend, with every other county in the state posting higher unemployment numbers in July.

September is Notional Library Card Month, and the Anderson County Library System has made a video to promote the season, and is also offering a series of events and incentives to promote the activities available to all citizens at the library.

Anderson County Council on Tuesday gave initial approval to tax incentives for an American company which will bring 35 new jobs with average annual salaries of $75,000-$145,000 per year.

The family owned company will invest $30 million in the project and the first year economic impact on the county is expected to top $13 million.

The Market Theatre, in cooperation with the City of Anderson, will present the family-friendly musical “James and The Giant Peach” Aug. 22-26 in Carolina Wren Park.

The production is free, and those who attend are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, and picnic baskets and coolers are welcomed (though no glass or outside alcohol is allowed), but pets are not allowed in the park for the show.

These candidates represent the final round of five. Council has previously interviewed 10 candidates for the two newly created library board seats.

Council is expected to choose an indeterminate number of finalists from the 15 interviews for a second round, and announce their decision at the Sept. 3 county council meeting.

Filing is now closed for Anderson County non-partisan races for November’s general election.

Candidates for the Soil and Water District Commission, school district trustees, the county Board of Education, Watershed Conservation Districts, Fire District Commissioners, and Public Service Districts for Homeland Park Water and Sewer are set for the election.

In 1984 a group of concerned Anderson citizens and medical professionals, recognizing that too many in the community had no access to medical care, decided to do something about it.

They gave birth to the Anderson Free Clinic for those who could not afford medical treatment and were often forced to do without or seek help at the emergency room.

The clinic is now celebrating 40 years of community service, with a carnival-themed event Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Bleckley Inn.

Of the 152 total votes cast, Tysi received 106, or 69.74 percent, and Tanner White received 46, or 30 percent. Voter turnout was 6.02 percent.

The unanimous vote comes six weeks after the state budget mandated school districts to adopt a policy banning cellphones during the school day or risk state funding. But the State Board of Education must first adopt a model policy for them to follow.

Anderson City Council on Monday unanimously approved the annexation and rezoning of 139.5 acres on Shockley Ferry Road across from Silver Brook Cemetery to single-family residential which is expected to have 235, 7,000-square-foot lots. The houses will be required to meet all city requirements and will have a density of 1.75 houses per acre.

All seven council members took part in the interviews.

The latest five are the second of three rounds of five of the 15 finalists being considered for two, newly created at-large board seats for the library system. Council expressed a need for broader representation for the board based on the county’s rapid population growth.

The city is looking at the initial stage, a six-foot wide sidewalk linking the two campuses, aimed at improving pedestrian safety. The city and university are working with Seamon Whiteside engineering to design this initial phase of the project. Monday’s proposal is to award the construction bid for the roughly one-mile sidewalk to Southern Concrete and Construction for $396,000 and will be paid for by the accommodations tax.
