A new resource to help those whose lives have been impacted by mental health issues in the works for Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties.

The board currently has seven members, each appointed from the seven council districts by county council members. An overflow crowd was on hand at the Feb. 20 meeting, with supporters and opponents of the move taking nearly an hour of public comment time to express their views.

The fruity- or candy-flavored e-cigarettes that have caused vaping by youth to skyrocket are already illegal. Only e-cigarettes that taste like tobacco or menthol are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and they’re generally marketed as a way to help adults quit smoking.

“Here’s to being single and drinking doubles,” a toast in one of the group’s early gatherings, becomes the rallying cry, as the quartet builds their camaraderie on Friday nights drinking on the porch and venturing into the bigger world in search of finding a purpose in middle age.

Bills introduced in both the House and Senate, mostly by Democrats, explicitly protect the fertility treatments, though there is nothing in South Carolina currently that puts them in jeopardy.

The 110 North Kitchen and Commissary is an incubator that features a professional kitchen for bakers, cooks and other food preparation equipment for food truck owners, area farmers, aspiring baker and other local business. The city built the facility with a series of grants.

ANDERSON COUNTY HAS BEEN AWARDED FEDERAL FUNDS MADE AVAILABLE THROUGH

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS)/FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

AGENCY UNDER THE EMERGENCY FOOD AND SHELTER NATIONAL BOARD PROGRAM.

Anderson County has been chosen to receive $58,218 from Phase 41 to supplement emergency

food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a National Board that is

chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency

and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National

Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The

Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide. The Local Board was charged to distribute funds

appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need

areas around the country.

A Local Board made up of mandated representatives from the local community will determine how

the funds awarded to Anderson County are to be distributed among the emergency food and

shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The Local Board is responsible for

recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under this

phase of the program.

Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds

must:

1) be private voluntary non-profits, faith-based or units of government,

2) be eligible to receive Federal funds,

3) have an accounting system,

4) practice nondiscrimination,

5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and

6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Anderson County has distributed Emergency Food and Shelter funds previously with Anderson

Interfaith Ministries, Salvation Army, Good Neighbor Cupboard, Safe Harbor, Anderson Emergency

Kitchen, Faith Presbyterian Food Bank, Golden Harvest and Second Harvest, the Zone and

Community Food Bank and Soul Food. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying

for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds can obtain the application at

www.unitedwayofanderson.org or contact Carol Burdette or Monica Rockwell, United Way of

an application. The deadline for applications to be received is noon on March 8, 2024.

The group, formed to both remember five documented victims of racial lynching in Anderson County between 1894 and 1911, and to work through “dialogue, education, and fellowship to move our community toward reconciliation and elimination of racial disparities and the realization of “Beloved Community” as described by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.”

With Anderson County Municipal elections scheduled for April 2, the deadline for voter registration to participate in this election is March 3.

Many of the comments were centered around “I wish we’d done this sooner.” Those unable to attend, can still leave comments here through March 13.

The growth also increases the need for the county support services, including law enforcement, road maintenance, the animal shelter and in other areas, said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns.

Anderson City Council agreed to send to the planning commission the annexation of 45 acres at 1401 Crestview Road for a new subdivision with 92 lots for single-family housing. The city requires the lots be at least 20,000 square-feet.

Council approved $49,500 to bring a headline music act to the Anderson Soirée in April 26 . Country Music Star Josh Turner, whose hits include “Long Black Train,” “Why Don’t We Just Dance,” and “Would You Go With Me,” will kick off this year’s downtown festival. Turner, who is from South Carolina, is best known for his deep voice and soulful country ballads.

Council will vote at the March 11 meeting on how to proceed. The new park will include an extensive redesign of the park (see below), with trails, a new pavilion, playground equipment, traffic and parking changes, and a priority of restoring the Whitner Creek which runs through the park to a natural state.

After nearly five months, court will reopen in the Anderson County Courthouse on Friday.

Anderson County voters voted in even greater numbers that the statewide totals, with 68.69 percent of voters choosing Trump, and 30.61 percent voting for former S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley. Only four precincts in Anderson County, one in City of Anderson, Denver, Pendleton and Sandy Springs favored Nikki Haley.
