Harriet/Midway/Crestview SCDOT Meeting Outlines Traffic Future

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

At the South Carolina Department of Transportation information meeting at T.L. Hanna High School Tuesday regarding a pair of roundabouts slated to be constructed near the intersections of Midway Road, Harriett Circle and Crestview, citizens were given a chance to view traffic patterns in the morning and evening at the busy intersections.

Many of the comments were centered around “I wish we’d done this sooner.” Those unable to attend, can still leave comments here through March 13.

The Harris/Midway Crestview Intersection Project includes a pair of roundabouts within 100 yards of each other aimed at improving traffic flow in the area as growth there accelerates. The plan includes the realignment of a section of Harriet Circle into Midway Road and closing a section of Harriet at the north end of the road that currently exits on Midway.

The part of Cox Creek which runs under Midway Road will also be improved and better protected with the new SCDOT plans.

After the comment period, SCDOT will begin obtaining right-of-ways, working with utility companies in case movement is needed and obtaining permits. Construction is set to begin in Summer of 2025.

Traffic is already an issue, especially during school pickup times, in the area. Crestview often sees backups of more than 30 cars at the Midway Road Stop sign during this time. With more than 600 new housing units under construction near the intersection, most as part of the City of Anderson’s annexation efforts, traffic issues are expected to grow exponentially worse.

The two roundabouts aim to relieve some of the congestion. The roundabouts are scheduled to be built at the corner of Midway and Crestview, and at a new cut across from Harriett Circle to Midway south of the Midway Presbyterian Church graveyard.
