Anderson City Council on Monday approved changes to the 30-acre Bailey Creek Commons townhouse subdivision on Simpson Road. Part of the development also includes annexation of an additional property for single-family detached houses.

Dr. Junius Smith, a former shipping magnate, planted the first tea plantation near Piedmont in the Golden Grove community in 1848 as an experiment in cultivation of the plant in the Upstate. Failed shipping endeavors led to Smith’s attempt to end the importation of tea from England and instead grow it locally.

Free shows include not only racing pigs, but the Wild West Showdown, Comedy Circus, Max Power Robot and an Exotic Petting Zoo. The fair will also feature new rides, including Sub-Zero and the Auto-Bahn.

The two exhibits, one in the Pendleton Library and the other in Pendleton Town Hall, include artifacts, photographs and other documents, including some well-known Pendleton natives and residents.

The ballot includes seven candidates, but three are no longer running for president – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had all dropped out of the race. Voters in the primary will be given a guide outlining who has dropped out. 

Artists from the area were provided with a box of random items and given two hours to create an original piece of mix-media art.

“I am excited to return to Anderson County, where I began my DSS career, and use the skills and knowledge that Abbeville County has taught me on a larger scale”, said Johnson. “I am glad to be home in Anderson County and hope to make our presence known for doing great things in and for the community with the help of our DSS professionals, partners and providers.”

Based on public announcements, so far there are four contested, including United State House District 3, South Carolina House Districts 6, 8 and 9, and Anderson City Council Seat 6 (The municipal election is April 2).

Young, who will succeed current Superintendent Robbie Binnicker, who will retire at the end of the school year, has spent more than 21 years in the district as a teacher, coach, principal and administrator.

Knox, who joined the ministry in 2022, is expected to be named director of the group soon. He was recently honored by the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce as one of Anderson’s “20 under 40” leaders.

It was not made clear by council why the resolution to expand the board from seven members, one from each district, to nine (two at-large districts).

The former director of one of South Carolina’s largest state agencies is challenging U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace for the state’s 1st District.

At the regular 6:30 p.m. meeting to follow, council will vote on tax incentives for a project that is part of a joint Anderson-Greenville County industrial park.

The president received almost 96 percent of the vote in Anderson County, with 2,274 votes. Statewide, Biden also received roughly the same percentage among those who voted.

The results are being sorted to offer details of road conditions countywide, and the information will be available to the public in March on an interactive online map.

The county will also release a list of priorities on roads and bridges which need repair based on condition, and/or how long a road has been left on a waiting list for maintenance.

Polls are open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson County Board of Registration and Elections, 301 North Main Street, Anderson, for the South Carolina Democratic Presidential Preference Primary.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, child care costs have increased 214% since 1990, while the average family income has risen 143%.

Twenty-seven other states allow open carry of guns without a permit, including nearly every state in the Deep South.

Young, who has been with the district for 21 years, has served as a math teacher at Wren High School, junior varsity basketball coach, assistant principal of Wren Middle School before returning to Wren High School as an principal and assistant principal.

Testing on the site was completed last year and Camden Management Partners, Inc., is now cleaning up the rubble on the property, which has been a mess and and eye sore on the edge of Pendleton for the past few years.
