N.C. Wildfires Cause Smoky Conditions in Anderson
AnMed’s Dr. Chet Walters, a critical care. internal medicine and pulmonary medicine specialist, said the smoke has prompted air quality alerts across the region, and recommends special precautions for those with breathing issues.
Council Oks Fork No. 2 Zoning, Breaks to Bring 78 Jobs
Council also gave initial approval to tax incentives for a three businesses looking to locate in the county. The first is a manufacturer of color concentrates and compounds which proposes to bring 24 new jobs with salaries of $28.88 per hour. A second company proposes to bring 28 new jobs with salaries of $19.28 per hour, and the third is a firm that produces finishing and decorating materials for the building trade which is proposing to bring 26 new jobs with salaries of $26.90 per hour.
Voters Ok Bonds to Help School Dist. 4 Meet Growth
In a close vote, 2,406 voters approved the referendum, while 2,259 voted no on the measure.

Most incumbents held their seats, and a few newcomers joined them in victory in Tuesday’s municipal elections in Anderson County.
Bram Stoker's Great-Grandnephew to Speak at AU
“Stoker on Stoker: Dracula Revealed,” will include a multimedia presentation in which he delves into Bram's life story and how he came to write the famous Gothic horror novel. Utilizing Bram's personal papers, he will offer insights into life in Victorian England and the inspirations for the novel that gave birth to a pop culture fascination with vampires that has lasted 125 years.
Anderson Author Shines on Both Sides of Prohibition in the South
Anderson Author Kathryn Smith, who first tackled the subject in “Baptists & Bootleggers: A Prohibition Expedition Through the South…. with Cocktail Recipes,” has brought a new batch of tales of the stills and those who reviled them in her latest book: “Methodists and Moonshiners: Another Prohibition Expedition Through the South…. with Cocktail Recipes.”
Council to Vote on Zoning in Fork No. 2 Precinct
Voters in the district, which includes part of the Townville area, approved a referendum seeking zoning in their district in August.
Wagner Found Satisfaction in Years of Service
Wagner said at the end of this term, he will have spent 34 years as part of the office, and that as the area grows and things change, the job is getting more challenging with every passing year. His years of service include time as deputy solicitor in the Tenth District and work in 13th Circuit in Greenville.

Tuesday Election Day Across Much of Anderson County
Voters across Anderson County will go to the polls Tuesday, for municipal elections and, in School Dist. 4, to consider a referendum on funding the future of their schools.
Superintendents Mostly Pleased with State Report Cards
The report card, which is both confusing and difficult to use as a measure of comparison, still offers glimpses of which schools are performing at or above expected levels, which are showing improvement, and which have work to do. Search by school here.
County Gets $200,000 Road Safety Grant
“This grant will help us to identify hazardous roads and road situations around the county,” said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns. “But more importantly, it will open up another avenue of federal funding for roads in Anderson County which we cannot access right now.”

New Sculpture Takes Wing on County Green Park
The large bronze “Pegasus,” (the winged horse in Greek mythology, usually depicted as a white stallion) is part of the Millennium Pegasus work by sculptor Sandy Scott of Lander, Wyoming. The sculpture, with a wingspan of 14.5 feet, weighs 1.5 tons and comes to Anderson after a time on display in Denver. The installation is temporary and will likely be relocated to a permanent site within the next two-three years.

Editorial: School Dist. 4 has Earned "Yes" Vote on Referendum
The Anderson Observer editorial board endorses and fully supports a “yes” vote on the referendum for Anderson School Dist. 4 schools and their future. Anything less would send a clear message that voters do not value quality education.
Anderson "Werewolf" of 1945 Remains Mystery
Eviscerated animals, multiple sightings of a dark animal standing on hind legs and moving quickly, took hold as news reports in both newspaper and radio stations spread the news and the panic. A team was hired to hunt the beast, but none was ever found. Even a West Coast “werewolf expert” failed to discover where the beast came from or why it left.
Inaugural “Spooky Street” Fills Downtown Anderson
Alysa Cameron, owner of Bare Esthetics and Jessica Tinsley, owner/cosmetologist at Level II Hair Salon, put together what they hope will be an annual event by recruiting other downtown businesses to participate. Early hopes of the City of Anderson closing off part of Main Street did not materialize, but perhaps greater consideration will be given to next year’s Spooky Street.
Countywide Fish Fry Brings Crowds to Farmers Market
Anderson County Councilman Glenn Davis, Dist. 2, who put together the event, said such gatherings were a way to show the community they are not forgotten.
