Inaugural “Spooky Street” Fills Downtown Anderson

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

A crowd of more than 3,000 Halloween revelers filled the streets of downtown Anderson Monday night for the first Spooky Street holiday event.

Organized by a pair of downtown business owners, the event featured around 50 downtown business owners and other community groups offering candy and games. The scope of the event was far more popular than any had anticipated, leading to some candy shortages and long lines at some places, but most seem to take the small inconveniences in the spirit of the season.

Alysa Cameron, owner of Bare Esthetics and Jessica Tinsley, owner/cosmetologist at Level II Hair Salon, put together what they hope will be an annual event by recruiting other downtown businesses to participate. Early hopes of the City of Anderson closing off part of Main Street did not materialize, but perhaps greater consideration will be given to next year’s Spooky Street.

Conservative estimates suggest the Halloween event was second only to the Soiree in attendance, with both sides of Main Street filled from Calhoun Street to the City of Anderson Police station.
