National Safe Digging Day Set for Friday
Friday is National Safe Digging Day (also known as 811 Day), and Piedmont Natural Gas and Duke Energy are reminding professional excavators and do-it-yourselfers of the importance of calling 811 before digging to protect the nation’s underground utility infrastructure, prevent potential injury and avoid electric and natural gas outages.

“Serving as the Mayor of West Pelzer is my greatest accomplishment,” said Sanders. “Being able to be at the forefront of a once desolate town to a vibrant rural community takes a lot of energy, commitment, and enthusiasm. A mayor’s job is to be the chief storyteller and chief urban designer and I know that I have left West Pelzer better than I found it. But this has been a team effort.”
Pendleton Rhinos Celebrate Service, Community Action
The Pendleton Rhinos, a civic organization working to make their community a better place to work and live, through mentoring and community service, celebrated the efforts of those making a difference at their Black & Gold Gala Saturday Night.

A total of 297 of the 389 votes cast voted “Yes” on providing zoning for their district.
Clemson to Award Degrees Thursday, Friday
On Thursday, at a 3 p.m. in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts, Doctoral hooding will take place at 3 p.m.
Friday, beginning at 9 a.m., commencement is scheduled for bachelor’s and master’s degree candidates in Littlejohn Coliseum. Tickets will not be issued, but graduates are asked to limit to a maximum of six guests. Doors open two hours prior to ceremonies.
Parts of Earle Street Closed this Week for Crosswalk Repairs
The City of Anderson Public Works Division will begin repair of two crosswalks downtown this through Friday week. West Earle Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street to West Orr Street. All parking lots along West Earle Street will be accessible from West Orr Street and West Earle Street.

The past couple of weeks have been some of the busiest of the summer in Anderson with concerts, plays, tournaments and other events brining Christmas-like traffic to town.
New Emergency Kitchen Site to Open in Late September
The current (old) location, which is owned by the City of Anderson, is a converted residential home, and has presented challenges for use as a the community kitchen, with seating capacity of 28. The new location offers greater potential to expand the goals of the ministry with seating for 66.
S.C. Education Chief says Literacy a Top Priority

S.C. Tax-Free Weekend Set for Aug. 4-6
While providing taxpayers with an exemption on the six percent statewide sales tax as well as any applicable local taxes, the tax-free weekend also benefits in-state businesses by urging taxpayers to do their back-to-school shopping in South Carolina. During this time, taxes will not be imposed on clothing, shoes, school supplies, book bags, computers, printers, bedspreads and linens, and more.
Council Oks RV Park Ordinance, Historic Courthouse Repairs
Council maintains the legislation, which is a new ordinance, aims to make sure the parks are properly located, designed and maintained, was amended to also ensure any structures in the parks are compliant with county building codes.

TCTC has Big Expansion Plans for Anderson Campus
Heading into the new school year, the school has big expansion plans, especially for the Anderson campus. TCTC President Galen DeHay said plans are in the works to move and expand the automotive program to Anderson, adding diesel, heavy diesel, electric vehicle repair. The future also hopes to add a program in partnership with Bosch for working with hydrogen fuel cells.
Council to Consider Historic Courthouse Repairs, RV Park Regulations
Anderson County Council will look at funding and bids for urgent work needed on the historic Anderson County Courthouse as part of Tuesday’s meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse.
Palmetto Seniors Fall Just Short in Bassmaster Nationals
Bryson Gurley and Ethan Evatt came within 11 ounces of winning the 2023 Strike King Bassmaster High School Championship at Green Pond Landing. Instead, the rising seniors at Palmetto High School seniors, finished a strong second against 480 teams from across North America in the national tournament.
Meals on Wheels to Open West Pelzer Senior Center
The Senior Place: West Pelzer, scheduled to open Aug. 7, will provide a place for senior citizens to gather for a nutritious meal, social and recreational activities, and educational opportunities.

Mercy Chapel Marks Nine Years of Compassionate Service
The ministry serves breakfast and lunch five days a week at their facility on South Main Street, and is a ministry hub in the neighborhood that once housed Orr Mills. From medical and mental health assistance, to finding rides to work, the church works with other nonprofits and churches in the area to serve those who need a little extra help and a safe, compassionate place to find fellowship.
