Williamston Witnessing Growth; Big 4th of July Event Set

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

As Williamston gets ready for their annual Fourth of July celebration this weekend, the town continues to experience rapid growth in housing and new and potential new businesses.

Saturday will feature a full day of events starting with the Freedom Market at 10 a.m. in Middle and Spring Park. Then park will then host the annual “Bobbers on Big Creek Race” at 1 p.m., followed by the golf cart parade will be at 3 p.m. The Williamston Fire Department will host a car show throughout the day, and the evening will conclude with concerts by Gith Rigdon and Jon Langston followed by a fireworks show.

“We had probably 5,000 people here last year,” said Williamston Mayor Rockey Burgess. “We expect it to be even bigger this year”

Meanwhile, the trail expansion that goes through Veterans Park, crosses over Williams Street and extends almost to Mill Street is in progress, and coming in under budget, Burgess said.

Construction is also close to beginning on more than 150 homes in two developments in town, which represents one the largest new housing starts in the town’s history.

New businesses, including plans for new commercial development at Big Creek Station, an area that includes a disk golf course, are also under way.

“There are lots of big things are happening in Williamston," said Burgess.
