Ring in the Holidays and Help the Salvation Army Do More Good

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

The Salvation Army of Anderson County is gearing up for its annual Red Kettle campaign and calling on community members to volunteer as bell ringers this holiday season.

Board members say the familiar sound of ringing bells outside local retailers provides more than Christmas cheer — it’s the organization’s largest source of funding for its emergency shelter operations. This year, residents are encouraged to form Bell Ringing Day teams, pairing up in groups of two for volunteer shifts throughout the Christmas season.

The Salvation Army has served Anderson since 1910 and continues to be a vital safety net for individuals and families in need. In 2024, the Stringer Emergency Lodge provided shelter for 497 people, totaling 13,000 nights of lodging and 17,000 meals. Nearly one-third of those served were able to secure stable housing or enter residential programs addressing the root causes of their homelessness.

Beyond its shelter services, the organization’s Angel Tree program provided toys and clothing for 1,200 children last Christmas. Its social services office also distributed more than $42,000 in assistance for rent, utilities, prescriptions, and other urgent needs.

Organizers say volunteering to ring the bell is an easy and rewarding way to spread holiday goodwill while directly supporting local families. Information and sign-up links for individuals or teams are available through the Salvation Army of Anderson’s website.
