Pendleton Mill Cleanups, Parking Expansion Symbols of Growth

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

With the Pendleton Oil Mill reduced to a few piles of rubble, progress toward extending downtown in that direction is moving forward. The property will likely be a green space until all additional testing is done, but after that the town will decide on how to develop the property.

The nearby Cheney Mill project is even closer to getting under way. The planned development district will feature housing and retail and will also eventually have sidewalks that lead to the Village Green.

On the other side of Pendleton, the Queen Street renovations are near completion of phase one, with new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping, and other ideas are being volleyed about for additional improvements to the area just off the square.

The town is also working to help visitors find the expanded parking areas adjacent to downtown, with better signage and more education on the location of available parking.

Housing starts in the area continue to skyrocket, making Pendleton the fastest growing town in Anderson County. Mayor Frank Crenshaw discussed the growth and progress as well as the upcoming Spring Jubilee in his interview with the Anderson Observer.
