Pelzer Mayor-Elect Hopes to Build Community

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Pelzer Mayor-Elect Chase Smithwick, a proud husband, father, and veteran, spoke candidly in an interview this week about the personal principles and community values that define his public service, offering readers a window into a new chapter for the town nestled in Anderson County.

Smithwick, who will be sworn in as mayor in December or early January, framed his decision to seek office in terms of family and legacy.

“Pelzer’s always been my home,” said Smithwick. “I’ve always had a sense of trying to give back. That’s why I joined the National Guard at a later age in life.”  As he transitions away from his Guard duties next year, Smithwick’s focus shifts back to his hometown and, most notably, to his children.

“I want to be able to give my kids something special or something that resembles the past like his grandparents grew up with,” he said, highlighting an ethos that mirrors generational pride and continuity.

Smithwick was quick to place family and service at the heart of his identity.

“I’m a husband, I’m a proud new dad, and I’m a veteran,” Smithwick asserted, underscoring priorities that blend personal milestones with broader social responsibility.

Smithwick’s imminent inauguration marks an ongoing moment of renewal for Pelzer, which is already under way in a town historically shaped by its textile heritage and community spirit. For Smithwick, being mayor-elect means more than holding a title—it means building a legacy worthy of Pelzer’s past and present.
