Lines Greet Early Voters in GOP Presidential Primary

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

If you have tried to vote early in the Anderson County Republican Presidential Preference Primary, you’ve probably noticed lines at most times of the day at the Anderson Board of Registrations and Elections office downtown. Early voting is now closed.

Moving into Friday, 5,799 voters cast ballots in the election during early voting, which opened Feb. 10. The official primary day is Saturday.

In the Feb. 3 Democratic Presidential Preference Primary, United States President Joe Biden received almost 96 percent of the vote in Anderson County, with 2,274 votes. Statewide, Biden also received roughly the same percentage among those who voted in the primary.

The Presidential Preference Primaries are the only elections the South Carolina General Assembly allows parties to choose election dates. Despite the extra work and cost, the parties in South Carolina declined to have a shared date for primary voting.
