Honea Path’s Watkins Community Center will officially reopen its art space this week, marking a new chapter for a program that has been a cornerstone of the community for more than two decades.
The Honea Path Arts Center, which will now be run by local volunteers and community leaders, will hold its grand opening on Thursday beginning at 6:15 p.m., at the Watkins Community Center.
The Arts Center has a long history in Honea Path, having operated for many years under the direction of the town. This year, the program transitioned back to the Watkins Community Center, an effort its leaders say will re-emphasize its community-led roots.
"This is more than just an art space—it’s about building a sense of belonging in Honea Path," said Sam Gilmer, Co-Chair of the Arts Center Committee. The committee, along with Arts Center Director Amy Moore, hopes the center will become a regional destination for the arts while remaining accessible to all local residents.
According to a press release, the Arts Center plans to offer a variety of programs, including painting and pottery workshops, seasonal craft classes, and rotating art exhibits. It will also partner with local schools to provide community outreach. The grand opening is open to the public, with tours of the new facility, opportunities to meet instructors, and information on upcoming classes.
