Filing for Non-Partisan Candidates Begins Today

Beginning today, the quiet annual machinery of local democracy will begin turning again in Anderson County, when nonpartisan candidate filing opens for a slate of school, water, and watershed offices. The filing period runs through August 17 at noon, and there are no filing fees, though every candidate must complete a Statement of Candidacy before the deadline.

The offices on the ballot are of consequence. They include seats on the County Board of Education, school trustee positions across the county’s various districts and areas, seats in Homeland Park Water District and Piedmont Public Service District, and several watershed conservation boards whose work tends to be noticed most by the people who are closest to the water. These include:

Anderson County Board of Education Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6

Anderson County School District 1 Areas 1, 4, 5, 7

Anderson School District 2 Area 1, 3, 4,

At-Large Anderson School District 3 Areas 1, 4,

At-Large School District 4 Areas 2, 4, 5

Anderson School District 5 Areas 2, 5, 6, At-large

For Anderson County’s voters, the announcement is a reminder that elections are built as much from forms and deadlines as from speeches and yard signs. Candidates seeking to enter the race are being directed to the Anderson County Registration and Election Commission at 301 N. Main Street, or to the State Election Commission’s website, where the relevant instructions are available.

The watershed seats are another sign of how local government often works by geography rather than rhetoric. Candidates for districts located solely within Anderson County will file locally, while those in multi-county districts will file with the State Election Commission; the openings include Big Creek, Broadmouth Creek, Brushy Creek, and Three & Twenty, each with a specified number of seats.
