County to Vote on Budget, Roads Referendum
Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer
Anderson County Council will consider on first reading a resolution to approve a referendum for a one-penny Capital Projects Sales Tax to fund repair/replacement of the county’s 15,400 miles of roads and 157 bridges Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse downtown.
A commission consisting members from county council, the City of Anderson and other townships in the county is in place to craft the actual referendum. If approved the tax will raise approximately $35 million per year for county roads, municipal roads and bridges. Currently Anderson County has a $350 million backlog of road/bridges work that is largely unfunded.
Council will also vote, on first reading on a $292 million budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The budget, which is still being fine-tuned, must be approved in three readings before the next fiscal year begins July 1.
At the council’s 6:30 p.m. recognition meeting, council will honor, Cindy Fox Miller, and Johnny Harvin of Connect Powdersville for their contributions to community development and the success of the Rhythm on the River Festival.
