Council to Consider Tax Incentives

Greg Wilson/Anderson Observer

Anderson County Council will vote on a pair of tax incentives, one for a new business and one for an existing business as part of Tuesday’s regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the historic courthouse downtown.

One new business which is projected to bring a $51 million investment and 54 jobs. The company, code named “Project Pine,” is a plasma gasification concern, and the jobs will pay $53 per hour. Anderson County Economic Development Director Burriss Nelson said the first year economic impact of the company is projected at $37 million.

The plasma gasification industry uses extremely high temperatures to convert waste into a clean-burning fuel called syngas. This "waste-to-energy" process reduces landfill waste and can destroy hazardous materials. While it offers benefits like energy generation and resource recovery, it faces challenges with high costs, energy consumption, and scalability.

A bid on road work from the Anderson County Transportation Committee will also be considered.

Council will also vote on third reading a fee in lieu of tax special source credit agreement for the warehouse on Long Road. The vote was tabled at the last council meeting until an agreement over lighting could be reviewed.

At the 6 p.m. honors and recognitions meeting, council will fete Joel Kay for fifty years as the radio voice of Belton-Honea Path High School Bears football.
