Anderson County Democrats Urge Unity in Fight for Democracy
Dr. Ernest E. Mackins/Chair, ACDP
We are the Democratic Party of Anderson, SC. We are the party that truly honors the Constitution and the belief that all people are equal under the law, and, therefore, deserving of dignity and fairness. That sacred document grants us inalienable rights, most importantly the pursuit of life and liberty. We believe, whether informed by religion or conscience, that we are all important players in this fragile democracy, and we must fight for it and defend it.
If we do not fight for it, real elections will no longer exist, and if carried out will be no more than theater. It's time to get involved. We are all our brothers' keepers, and if democracy does not work for all of us, it works for none of us. It's time to stand up, to speak up and to do something.
Under the present circumstances, the rule of law has been thrown to the wayside. Politicians choose their voters instead of their voters choosing those they want representing them. People are at risk of losing their health care, have no access to affordable housing, and many are worried about how to feed their children and themselves. Is this our country or only the country of the very rich? We have to decide if we will defend ordinary citizens, fight for small businesses and protect rural hospitals.
We must insist that those who choose to serve in the armed forces are only deployed to fight our enemies, not their fellow citizens who peaceably assemble and exercise their precious 1st Amendment right of free speech to protest. We must protect our planet and leave the world a better place for our children. We can't fight for all these things separately, but together, we are strong. We may not agree on everything, but we can agree that this is our democracy. Don't let anyone take it away from us.
