Observer Reports
The Electric City Playhouse is chiming in the season with a light-hearted look at the one who rules the darkness.
In “Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors,” a vampire has retained his appetite but lost any obligation to behave with Gothic dignity. This comic reworking of Bram Stoker’s story turns the familiar encounter between an English visitor and a Transylvanian count into a fast-moving tangle of seduction, danger and people discovering that their circumstances are considerably worse than they had understood.
The play’s joke is not merely that Dracula can be funny. It is that terror and ridiculousness can occupy the same room. Clever wordplay, rapid character changes and gender-bending comedy replace much of the original’s solemn dread.
“Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors,” runs through this weekend. Tickets at https://ecplayhouse.ludus.com/index.php
