Leaders from Anderson's faith and elected officials echoed the message of Dr. MLK Jr. Monday night at the Anderson County Ministerial Association's annual salute to the late civil rights leader.

The water council and new grant program are part of Upstate Forever and Savannah Riverkeeper efforts to spend legal settlement dollars from past polluters on long-term, community-driven projects that will safeguard Anderson’s water quality.

The $7 million effort, which should be complete by fall, is also expected to provide a economic boost for Anderson County by hosting regional events.

Winter brings dreams of snow, mostly to Southerners, and the Belton Area Museum wants to help. 

The museum’s latest exhibit, “Let it Snow,” kicks off Sunday at 3 p.m. at the historic Belton train depot with the goal of bringing a winter wonderland to the area.

The group has already helped revitalize housing in some challenged neighborhoods in the county. 

The proposal allowing vouchers passed the Senate Education Committee on Thursday. Members approved a nearly identical bill to the one that passed in 2022, but it died when senators and the House, which passed its own version, couldn't agree on a compromise.

The Anderson County Pets Are Worth Saving animal shelter is looking for a few good homes. The shelter is full, and PAWS Director Dr. Kim Sanders says there has never been a better selection of dogs.

With nearly four decades of experience, Chief Kevin Marsee, who took over the position in December, has witnessed a lot of changes in the profession.

“I've been at PAWS for 6 years now and we have never been this full,” said Dr. Kim Sanders, director of the shelter.  “We had to move dogs into temporary holding kennels to make room for the new dogs that came into the shelter today. So, I am asking each one of you to show up and help all of us at PAWS. 

S.C. Sen. Mike Gambrell and S.C. House Representatives Anne Thayer, Thomas Beach and Craig Gagnon participated in the annual event, to outline some of their priorities for the year ahead. 

The Special Needs Registry will give first responder details about the person and their condition, as a new source of information to first responders to an emergency.  

In October, the county was awarded a $500,000 grant from the United States Department of Interior Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to be used towards the development of a new recreation facility on the Saluda River in Piedmont.

Anderson County Council reelected Chairman Tommy Dunn and Vice Chairman Brett Sanders to continue in their leadership roles for 2023 as part of Tuesday night's meeting.

The trail would begin near North Main Street in Belton and arrive in Anderson at North Gossett Street.

Anderson County’s Accommodation (ATAX) Grant funds were up more than 45 percent in the fiscal year 2021-2022, with $956,746 collected from June 2021-May 2022.

After more than a decade of service with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Foster believes his experience make him an ideal candidate for the position. Foster replaces Probate Judge Martha Newton who served in the office for close to half a century.
